Hakan Calhanoglu has claimed that he did not deserve the abuse he got from some AC Milan fans after his move to Inter, and cited the Scudetto win as his ‘revenge’.

Calhanoglu made the controversial switch from Milan to Inter in the summer of 2021 on a free transfer, and he was forced to watch on as his former club celebrated the Scudetto the following season.

He became the subject of ridicule as a result, but the Turkish midfielder is now able to celebrate a league title of his own after Inter captured their 20th Scudetto during the derby on Monday night against Milan.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man has become a key cog in Simone Inzaghi’s machine playing in a deeper role, having never really managed to nail down a position with the Rossoneri.

Calhanoglu spoke during an interview with Il Giornale about Inter’s title win and the emotions that he feels afterwards, with his comments relayed by Calciomercato.com.

What are your emotions?

“I am happy and proud to have reached this extraordinary goal. We wanted this second star with all of our beings. A success that we deserved for the splendid work done together. I saw the images of the match, the celebrations of the fans and I still can’t believe it. It’s too great a joy to describe.”

You joined Inter on a free from Milan…

“I have always worked in silence and also suffered in silence. Once I arrived at Inter I had only one objective: to give my best and win with this extraordinary team. The victory was a great revenge for me.”
