'I don’t have a clear vision': Rafael Nadal still uncertain over Roland Garros participation after Madrid Open exit

Rafael Nadal expressed uncertainty about his Roland Garros participation. In that clay court Grand Slam, Nadal has a record 14 titles but following his Madrid Open exit, he made it clear that he has not yet decided to play in Paris.

Nadal succumbed to a 7-5, 6-4 defeat in the fourth round against the Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka and bid an emotional farewell to the crowd at the Caja Magica where he won five titles. After the match, Nadal said he has planned to play at the upcoming Rome Open, scheduled to start on May 6.

However, if he doesn’t deal with any physical problems, he will make his appearance at the French Open, maybe for the last time. He missed last year’s French Open due to the hip flexor injury he suffered during the Australian Open.

I will talk about Roland Garros after Rome. I understand your urgency and would like to have a clear vision of what might happen, but I don't have it. I hope to play in Rome, if there are no setbacks, and continue to progress.  Rafael Nadal said at the post-match press conference

Although Nadal is mulling over his participation at Roland Garros, he surely won’t announce his retirement post the event. A few days ago, he accepted an invitation from Bjorn Borg to play at the Laver Cup, scheduled to start in September. Nadal will be representing Team Europe alongside Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev

Rafael Nadal’s wife and sister cry after his Madrid Open exit

In his farewell speech, Rafael Nadal confirmed he won’t make an appearance in Madrid next year. He thanked the crowd for their unwavering support and expressed his satisfaction for evoking strong emotions through his performances.

Nadal emphasized on sportsmanship, saying he always tries to be respectful and kind, though he admitted to having made mistakes. As he was giving that emotional speech, Nadal’s family- wife Maria Francisca Perello, and sister Maribel- on the Manolo Santana court, started crying. Nadal joked that even if he behaved badly on the courts, his family would still cry.

Those people in my family cry...it's normal. Even if I had behaved horribly, I suppose they could cry too,  because they have a different affection for me than the people around me.  Rafael Nadal said after the defeat

Before the Madrid Open, Nadal played at the Barcelona Open but lost to Australia’s Alex de Minaur. The event was also his first one since the Brisbane International this year.
